Two Caltrans workers have been killed recently while attempting to patch highway potholes. In an immediate response to mitigate this hazard, Caltrans Divisions of Research and Maintenance are supporting an AHMCT research effort to deploy innovative equipment to Caltrans Maintenance crews to dramatically reduce worker exposure when conducting highway patching operations.
The newest generation ALCS machine have extended capabilities and are no longer limited to longitudinal only crack sealing operations. Our current machine, called the Sealzall has been developed with a multi-purpose heated hose and manual wand assembly to enable this equipment to be quickly configured for any type of crack sealing operation on the highway.
The second-generation GPS-ATD to replaces traditional paper-and-pencil and computer-assisted approaches for travel surveys. The GPS-ATD minimizes the user burden during longitudinal travel behavior surveys, while providing accurate, reliable, and spatially dense traveler behavior data at a significantly reduced cost. The second-generation GPS-ATD leverages commercially available hardware combined with an enhanced version of AHMCT’s travel diary software platform.
AHMCT researchers developed a prototype machine, a dexterous manipulator, attached on a commercially available vacuum truck. AHMCT is supporting the testing and evaluation of the Vacall ARDVAC machine in Caltrans operations.
AHMCT researchers developed a prototype machine that enables a single driver operator to place or retrieve a lane closure with up to 100 cones. Design of a high capacity machine for up to 300 cones was also developed. In 2005 the Traf-tech Corporation produced a commercial machine based on the AHMCT design. AHMCT is supporting the testing and evaluation of the Traf-tech machine in Caltrans operations.
Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) are effective in reducing congestion and collisions. Some mountain pass roads are closed over the winter, and buried deep in snow by the spring–opening these passes is a difficult and dangerous job. There are few indicators to help find the road, and over time some of these indicators may no longer be available. The current research will develop a system to provide the operator with a visual display that will help them find the road, and safely and efficiently open the pass to the traveling public. […]
AHMCT researchers have developed a coordinated set of standards and specifications for the use of laser scanning in Caltrans. Guidelines clarify the common limitations of 3D laser scanners and recommend mitigation methods, and will help engineers and surveyors to select the right scanner and determine optimum scanning settings for survey applications.
